Grinding equipment can be divided into ball mill, rod mill, self-grinding mill and gravel mill according to different grinding media. Ball mills and rod mills are most commonly used. The biggest difference between the two is that the grinding medium of the ball mill is a steel ball, and the grinding medium of the rod mill is a steel rod.


First, the difference between the rod mill and the ball mill

The ball mill and the rod mill work similarly, and grind materials by the rotation of the cylinder, using the centrifugal force of the grinding medium and the friction between the grinding medium and the mineral. But the difference is:


1. The steel ball in the cylinder of the ball mill needs to be thrown to the highest point. The impact of the steel ball on the mineral is used to crush the mineral. Therefore, it runs very fast and consumes a lot of power. But the rod mill mainly relies on the friction between the rod and the rod to grind, so that the cylinder does not need to be rotated too fast, and the power consumption is rather lower.


2. The biggest feature of the rod mill is that it has a large force on large-volume materials and a small force on small-sized materials until their particle size is similar, so the rod mill can avoid the formation of material mud.

The steps of iron beneficiation mainly include crushing, grinding, and beneficiation (flotation, re-election, magnetic separation). Grinding is an extremely important step. The equipment that can be selected during the grinding stage includes ball mills and rod mills. Of course, it can also be used together. How to choose specifically, can be based on the following principles:


1, the requirements for the discharge size

The ball mill and the rod mill have different particle sizes after grinding. The ball mill has a particle size ranging from 0.074 to 0.89 mm, and the rod mill has a particle size ranging from 0.147 to 0.833 mm. Therefore, we need to look at the output particle size requirements in the production. The 1-3mm finished product size usually use the rod mill whose energy consumption is low and suitable for coarse grinding; if the finished product size is less than 0.5mm, the ball mill should be chosen. The ball mill has stronger processing capacity and is suitable for fine grinding.


2, requirements on the production process

For some rare minerals, the production process will usually choose magnetic separation or re-election. At this time, it is better to choose a rod mill because the rod mill has a lower probability of over-grinding and can protect the rare minerals from loss.


3, depends on the nature of the material

The nature of the material also determines the choice of ball mill and rod mill. When the raw material is tungsten tin ore, it is best to choose a rod mill, but for iron ore, molybdenum ore, aluminum ash, lime, slag, it is the best to use a ball mill.
